Hebgen Lake landslide
The Hebgen Lake landslide in Yellowstone Park was a natural disaster in 1959 that claimed the lives of nine people. The event occurred just a few miles west of Yellowstone National Park.
When the earthquake hit, the ground shook so severely that the north side of the lake dropped nearly 20 feet. As a result, sections of Highway 287 fell into the lake. In addition, the dam was severely eroded.
Several aftershocks accompanied the quake. These were large enough to slow down search and rescue efforts. Some survivors could get out of the area on roads that had already been cleared. However, some stranded people were left to fend for themselves.
A massive landslide occurred at the same time as the earthquake. It buried 73 million metric tons of debris and killed at least nine people.
