Meenakshi Temple stands out from modern Hindu temples by being lavishly decorated. Rather than featuring minimalist designs or stark white structures, this one boasts vibrant decorations filled with colored figures and sculptures adorning every corner. The tallest gopura rises approximately 170 feet high with over 1500 figures that are repaired and repainted every twelve years; such displays excite some visitors while repelling others.
Temple grounds also contain several shops selling fruit and flower offerings for sacrifice, guidebooks, votive sculptures, jewelry, and commemorative t-shirts – as well as several statues and pillars – within an ancient golden lotus tank for devotees to bathe in. In addition to this attraction is an old golden lotus tank where worshipers may take a bath.
Meenakshi’s beautiful green-hued idol is an eye-catching sight. Her three breasts symbolize her fertility; according to legend, she emerged from a yajna as a triple-breasted child, causing concern from the royal couple due to the lack of a male heir. A divine voice assured them that this third breast would vanish when they met future husbands.
Temple celebrates festivals each month of the Tamil calendar, drawing millions of pilgrims with its wedding festivities during Chithirai. This temple also features intricately sculpted pillars that depict stories about Lord Shiva’s miracles (Thiruvilayadals).
Meenakshi Temple in Pearland
On McLean Road south of Pearland lies this grand temple, which stands out as being one of only two outside India dedicated to Meenakshi, goddess of marriage and marriage union. Constructed using architecture typical to southern India – including Dravidian style design – this Dravidian style temple makes an impressive sight and offers an engaging way to experience Hindu culture. Established as one of the three oldest Hindu temples in the US.
Visitors to the Sri Meenakshi Temple Complex will notice an impressive collection of handcrafted masterpieces imported directly from India, as well as pieces made by Silpis (temple artisans) at Sri Meenakshi. Sam Kannappan, founder of Sri Meenakshi, explained that these stone workers had undergone training before arriving in Houston, where they worked for three years prior to coming to work at their temple.
As soon as they step inside the main temple, visitors are welcomed into a room adorned with tributes to gods and goddesses – including an elaborate shrine honoring Shiva, Meenakshi, Vishnu, and Lakshmi – with 16 different gods and goddesses being honored with individual shrines throughout. Additionally, an auditorium, playground area, and peacock sanctuary round off this experience for visitors.
As Houston’s only Hindu place of worship, this temple is an attractive destination for both tourists and locals alike. Offering an extensive range of religious offerings throughout the year, the temple welcomes anyone who wishes to visit. Special events like Chithirai Mahotsavam in April and Diwali in October add color and energy to its interior space.
Meenakshi Temple Society was formed in 1977, at which point plans for its construction – Maha Kumbabishekam – began. Construction started that same year.
Temple Society plans on finishing this $1 Million upgrade by the end of 2020. They aim to increase parking capacity, add recreational athletic fields, build a playground, and connect a smaller temple dedicated to Ganesha to the main complex.

Inspired by Madurai Meenakshi Temple in South India, where many priests originate from, its deities include Lord Shiva as Sundareswarar and Goddess Meenakshi, who preside over its worship services; other elements in its complex include an auditorium, peacock sanctuary, playground, and sports fields for added flexibility and fun!
Meenakshi Temple offers plenty of sights, but the main temple deserves the bulk of your visit. After leaving your shoes at the entrance, you will enter a room brimming with tributes to various gods and goddesses; then, as you move clockwise around its shrines, you may witness devotees presenting offerings of jewelry or fruit as you move clockwise around them.
As you explore the complex, you’ll encounter its Main Temple, which houses shrines for Shiva, Meenakshi, and Vishnu; four smaller temples dedicated to different gods in each corner; and its most striking feature – Ayiramkaal Mandapam Hall with hundreds of hand-carved pillars that create musical notes when touched!

At present, significant upgrades are underway to expand parking capacity and add recreational athletic fields. Furthermore, charitable activities and scholarship awards are organized at this temple society.
