Watershed
The Darby Creek watershed spans 77 square miles in Pennsylvania, covering portions of Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties. It contains twelve named tributaries, including Cobbs Creek, Naylors Run, Indian Creek Langford Run, Little Darby Creek, Julip Run, Meadowbrook Wigwam Foxes Run, Muckinipattis Creek, Hermesprota Run, Stoney Creek Whetstone Run, which feed into Tidal Darby Creek at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge as well as direct into Delaware River at Darby Creek Mouth Mudflat.
Big and Little Darby Creeks are internationally recognized for their vast biodiversity. Unfortunately, both creeks rank among Ohio’s most polluted streams of their size due to urban development impacts; their reputation warrants protection under Ohio’s Outstanding National Resource Waters designation under the Clean Water Act; this designation could aid these waters.
Honda recently donated 90 acres to the Ohio Nature Conservancy to protect and conserve the ecologically sensitive headwaters of Big Darby Creek. These headwaters boast some of the highest biodiversity in Ohio, home to over 80 species of fish – five endangered in state waters alone! Plus, 41 types of freshwater mussels belong to this ecosystem.
U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with EPA, conducts surface geophysics and stream porewater sampling at Lower Darby Creek Area Superfund Site to identify subsurface heterogeneities that may act as preferential pathways for contamination transport. This work is part of their comprehensive site characterization effort involving surface geophysics and sediment sampling.
